Through its TCUP award, QEM provides STEM technical assistance and professional development to Tribal Colleges and Universities, Alaska Native-serving institutions, and Native Hawaiian-serving institutions. Support is available to TCUP-eligible institutions for Planning Grants; Initiation Projects; Broadening Participation Research in STEM Education (BPR) Projects; Targeted STEM Infusion Projects (TSIP); and Research Initiation Awards (RIA). Through these mechanisms, along with collaborations with other National Science Foundation (NSF) units and its work with other organizations, TCUP aims to increase Native individuals' participation in STEM careers and the quality of STEM programs at TCUP-eligible institutions. Description of Most Recent QEM TCUP Workshop:
With support from NSF’s TCUP program and its Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP), QEM Network conducted a proposal development workshop for the Research Initiation Awards (RIA) Track offered by each program on Friday and Saturday, January 27-28, 2012, at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel BWI Airport in Baltimore, MD. TCUP RIAs support the participation of a STEM faculty member at a TCUP-eligible institution in research at an NSF-funded Center, a research-intensive institution, or a national laboratory. Each registrant submitted a one-page project summary that outlined his/her research goals and addressed NSF merit review criteria. These summaries were reviewed by QEM consultants who provided feedback to participants during the two-day workshop.
Plenary workshop sessions included discussions on establishing, maintaining, and sustaining a research program; research opportunities available to participants; strategies for assessment, evaluation, and dissemination of RIA-funded research; and seeking a research mentor as well as mentoring students in the conduct of research.
