Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP)

PROVIDING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE  TO THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION'S
HBCU-UP CURRENT AND POTENTIAL GRANTEES

QEM has received support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide technical assistance to current and potential grantees in the Foundation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities-Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP). The goal of HBCU-UP is to strengthen the Nation's workforce by enhancing the quality of undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs at HBCUs. HBCU-UP seeks to strengthen the undergraduate STEM programs at HBCUs by providing support in several areas, including: curricular reform and enhancement; faculty professional development; student support; research experiences for undergraduates; and scientific instrumentation to improve instruction.

Support from NSF is enabling the QEM Network to:

  • Conduct workshops prior to the HBCU-UP Program’s annual deadline for representatives from eligible institutions to help improve the quality of multi-year and planning grant proposals submitted to the Foundation’s HBCU-UP Program;

  • Conduct a follow-up workshop annually for QEM workshop institutions submitting proposals in the annual competition to discuss next steps, whether or not their proposals were successful;
  • Provide on-site technical assistance to multi-year HBCU-UP award recipients linked to critical needs identified during implementation of their HBCU-UP Projects;
  • Complete follow-up work for the August 2004 Mathematics Curriculum Development Workshop for institutions with HBCU-UP multi-year awards;
  • Conduct a workshop, focused on student professional development, for faculty at institutions with HBCU-UP multi-year awards in Project Year Two and an Assessment and Evaluation Workshop in Project Year Three; and
  • Maintain a listserv for HBCU-UP Project Directors as well as links at QEM’s Website to potential sources of federal and non-federal support to assist grantee institutions in sustaining and institutionalizing the successful elements of their HBCU-UP projects as HBCU-UP funding ends.
