Invitation to Leadership Development Institute for early career faculty at TCUP Institutions

Greetings:

The Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) Network invites Alaska Native, Native American, and Native Hawaiian early career faculty at the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP) grantee institutions to participate in an Early Career Faculty Leadership Development Institute

With support from NSF/TCUP, QEM will conduct the workshop on Thursday-Friday, July 20-21, at the Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center, 800 S. 3rd Street, Bismarck ND. The Workshop will focus on assisting and engaging early career faculty in pursuing academic leadership at their institution and developing effective planning skills to achieve their career goals. The two-day workshop is modeled after QEM’s earlier TCUP Leadership Development Institutes (2006-2009) that prepared over 30 TCUP faculty members for leadership as TCUP Fellows for the TCUP community.

At the Institute, guided by QEM TCUP consultants, participants will envision effective leadership at TCUP institutions, address specific components, of leadership, and use the Individual Leadership Development Plan template to establish specific objectives and prepare a timeline for career planning and meeting leadership development goals. Students from QEM’s INCLUDES REU program, gathering that week in Bismarck, will join the LDI for some sessions.  The Institute also will focus on mentoring as a critical support strategy for advancement of early career faculty and engage participants with a cadre of Native role models and potential mentors.

QEM’s NSF/TCUP award can support and will give priority to the participation of 25 native individuals who are early career faculty/administrators at TCUP institutions, including travel, lodging, and related expenses described in the attached QEM Travel Policy. QEM also will consider TCUP early career faculty who are not native but demonstrate strong commitment and potential leadership at their TCUP institution. If you are interested in participating in the TCUP Institute, please complete the attached registration form and return it to QEM no later than Friday, June 30, 2017. To complete your registration and participate in the Institute, you will need to complete a QEM Career Planning Profile to be provided by QEM and submit it to QEM on or before July 14.

QEM is looking forward to engaging and supporting TCUP early career faculty leadership development at the upcoming Leadership Development Institute. Please contact Althea Burns, QEM Associate, at altheamburns@comcast.net or 703/405-3961.
