INFORMATION AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE WORKSHOPS ON THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION’S TEACHER PROFESSIONAL CONTINUUM (TPC) PROGRAM
JULY 2005

With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), QEM conducted a series of regional workshops focused on the Foundation's Teacher Professional Continuum Program (TPC).  The workshops were designed to ensure that science and education faculty at minority-serving institutions (MSIs) with NCATE I or I and A accreditation are more aware of the TPC Program and to offer assistance in the development of their ideas for TPC preliminary proposals prior to the Program's May 2006 deadline for FY 2007 preliminary proposals.

QEM's TPC award supported the participation (travel, meals, and lodging) of two faculty members (one science faculty and one education faculty) from an eligible minority-serving institution in the workshop being held for institutions in a specific geographic region (see workshop schedule below for the workshop date and location for each of three regions).

The overall goal of the TPC Program is to develop a research agenda that informs science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) teaching practice and supports its connection to improved learning for all students.  The TPC Program requires the submission of preliminary proposals prior to the submission of full proposals.TPC offers three types of support: research studies (Category A), resources for professional development (Category B)and conferences and symposia (Category C).

QEM's regional workshops focused on Category A and Category B preliminary proposals. Workshop institutional teams were required to submit a one-page project summary
that addresses NSF's two merit review criteria (intellectual merit and broader impacts). Download the TPC Program Solicitation (NSF 05-580) at:

NSF/TPC Program Officers and QEM consultants (former TPC Officers and TPC grantees) assisted QEM staff in the conduct of the regional workshops.  The workshop series for MSIs that have National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accreditation to offer Initial (I) and Initial and Advance (I&A) teacher education programs took place as follows
